Fifth Response

This will be due by 12:00 Midnight February 15/16

*** Describe some ways in which the chorus survives in contemporary TV or film

*** Describe some of the dichotomies in The Bacchae (e.g. city and mountain, civilization and barbarism, etc.) Which God rules each realm? You may wish to do this as a list, instead of as a paragraph or essay.

*** Dionysus forces the people of Thebes to worship him. How do you relate or view a God who forces humans to worship him?

I feel that Dionysus is way to power hungry in the Bacchae. I feel that it isn't very "god-like" to make people worship him. Gods are meant to be looked up to and respected and its hard to do that when they are forcing you to worship them. Someone that craves power to the extent that Dionysus does lacks respect for other. Therefore, he can not be respected himself.

I agree with Derrick. It is not very "god-like" to force people to worship you. It should come more naturally if you are in fact a god and worth the power you claim. In the Bacchae Dionysus is extremely thirsty for power to a point where it seems desperate and an attempt to feed his insecurities. He loses his "worthiness" by doing this, in a way he is cheapening himself. It is kind of an apollonian tendency to want to be a leader like that. It is out of character for Dionysus to act in this manner. Tyrants throughout history have "forced" people to follow them. Although they are remembered, it is not always for their accomplishments but their downfalls. The leaders that matter gained a sort of "fan base" through common acceptance of their beliefs. They did not force their ideas upon others and force them to follow their ways. In the Bacchae Dionysus loses his worthiness of tragedy.

Honestly I feel there is one and only one god. Because we live in a very sinful world the devil has become a god to many people. I believe that many people choose to do sinful things, but the devil is definitely the influence. I would'nt say that the devil forces people to worship him but he makes it so hard for them to do the right things. I do not think anyone can force you to da anything, but if it is so hard to do what is right then the devil makes it so easy for you to fall back into his hands. This seems like a force but in reality if you are connected to the heavenly god you are forced to pray those devilish feeling away. In the book "Bacchae" It seems like Dionysus was considered the devil and Penetheus was God. It is very true when people say it is so easy to do bad but it's so hard to do the right things.I wonder why?

In my opinion, a God who forces humans to worship him is not really considered a God but would be considered one who wants complete control like a dictator. Of course, in our culture, our view of Gods is different than that of the Ancient Greeks' culture so I can not state that Dionysus is not godly just because our culture would not consider him godly. In the view of the Ancient Greeks, Gods had this type of power over people and this power was obviously accepted by humans. Although I personally do not agree a God can force humans to respect him but Dionysus did this successfully and the Greeks allowed it in their culture. With all things considered, it would be unfair of me to judge their beliefs of gods just as it not just for others to judge our cultural beliefs.

In the old times, if you didn't worship your God by going to church or make prayers during the day, you would be considered sinful. In my opinion this is still the case, however I do not beleive that it is a God that is making us feel bad if we don't beleive in him, but the people who worship him. I for one, am Ahteist. I was baptise in a cathelic church, and was brought up to be a Catholic. However I never fell a pull towards God, i always question the beleifs. I do not think that a God is forcing humans to do anything, I belive that humans are more pushing others about beleiving in God, than He would be.
However, in Bacchae, he pushes is power to the extreme were it is not a choise for the people to worship but it is forced upon them. I beleive that that is wrong, but we are lucky enought that we live in a world were you can choose to, "forced" beleive, in which ever God one chooses.

A god that forces people to worship him is anything but a God. Because obviously if he feels the need to force them then he really isn't as powerful as he may think.A true God should automatically have the power and the ability to earn the praise of his fellow followers. Unlike Dionysus who feels the need to destroy and victimize those who oppose his views, a true God knows that one day we will gain the power and respect of his followers without a second thought.

Personally, I believe that people should choose who they should worhsip. Nobody should be forced to do anything against their will, and worshipping a god they don't believe in is not right. If a god tried to make me worship him, I would have no respect towards him. Worshipping God is a believer's choice, if you don't believe there is a God, nobody is forcing you to believe. If you do believe, you are rewarded after death. It is just a preference for different people. But to be forced to believe in something you don't agree with is not right, which is what Dionysis is doing. This could lead to betrayal of "followers."

In my opinion, a God who has to force humans to worship him is probably not a very effective God. Humans should believe there is a reason to worship a certain God through his teachings and actions and through their own faith. A God who has to force humans to worship him probably won't have the loyalty or respect that a God should have from his followers. People should have the right to freely choose who they want to worship without being forced.

When humans wish to worship a God they strongly believe in, it should be from their own free will. It should not be forced upon them by a God. It doesn't say much about the God who forces his own people to worship him. Humans want to worship a God they respect, have faith in, and believe that the God can help him/her.
Humans have to be 100% sure they want to worship a God and what he represents. Dionysus may represent very good things but he should not force the people of Thebes to worship him. It shows that he's selfish and cares more about his popularity than the true love from his people.

I do not believe that any god should force humans to woship him. Spirituality is something that should come from within and not something that is imposed onto you by someone else, especially a "god". Many religions are guilty of trying to force their beliefs onto other people, which is bad enough as it is. For the highest power being of the religion to impose himself and try to force humans to believe is terrible.

Anybody God that forces humans to believe in them is not a God, but tyrant. I believe that nobody should be forced to do anything against their will. Spirituality comes from within and what you placed your values and morals into. Gods are meant to be looked upon through good and bad times and respected. A God that forces his people to worship him is far from a God but a dictator. Dionysus has good intentions, but forcing the people of Thebes is not one he should allow them to see his miraculous works instead of his selfish and non-caring ways which will gain him followers throughout the city.

I think it should be of choice to worship someone. If Dionysus is really as great as he says he is then he wouldn't have to force people to worship him. A true God is one that appeals to people and makes them want to worship him/her for the reason that they believe he is powerful in some way.

I believe that a group of individuals should never be forced to a worship a god. Dionysus is being somewhat disrespectful to his people, by pushing them into praising him. I think it would only be appropriate if they themselves chose to worship him, because then their beliefs would be true.

  14. *** Dionysus forces the people of Thebes to worship him. How do you relate or view a God who forces humans to worship him?

I view a God enforcing people to worship him is not truly a God. But I only view that because that is my God, and my God has unconditional love for me no matter if I worship him or not. In the book it is different because they had many God's not just one good God bad God. As we discussed in class all of the God's had some sort of flaw. So for the greek it would see this not as such as flaw since they share these same emotions. Thinking about it in todays standards of living we find it sometimes wrong to impose a religion on someone else. Throughout history though we have imposed religions such as christianity as some people still do to this very day. A God in a religion is not impose something because it would not make the individual comfortable as someone just trusting or having faith in a God. Because a God in reality does comfort us since it is always there for us.

*** Describe some ways in which the chorus survives in contemporary TV or film

In many films and tv shows there is a Greek chorus. A greek chorus is supplemental to the play and helps the audience understand what is going on. In movies with song and dance like Chicago, Grease, Across the Universe, and even High School Musical they all have elements of a Greek chorus. They help tie the story in together with song. In many movies and tv shows they have parts in between the scenes where a narrator or some other character is describing how the character feels just like in a Greek chorus. The chorus still survives in contemporary works because it helps the audience fully understand what is going on.

Any supreme being that has to force people to worship them is not really a god. As long as Dionysus forces his followers to worship him, he'll never have any true followers. Gods are suppose to comfort you in times of trouble, but those that worship Dionysus won't be able to be comforted by a god they fear.

I feel that a God who forces humans to worship him is not a God or does not show God like characteristics. When you worship a God you look to him for comfort when you need it and guidance when you are having troubles. I think that Dionysus is just power hungary and should not force humans to worship him.

  18. *** Describe some ways in which the chorus survives in contemporary TV or film

The purpose of the Greek chorus is to observe and comment on the action in the play. In the Bacchae, the chorus comments on the previous dialogue to help the audience understand what just happened.

In modern times the Greek chorus still exists. In the Muppets Show, Statler and Waldorf (the two old guys) are always in the audience to comment on the show. Also in the Muppets Christmas carol, Gonzo and Rizzo are there to observe and comment on the action. Another example of a Greek chorus is in the Lizzie McGuire show, Lizzie has an animated self to express to the audience what she can't say to her fellow actors.

I feel that a God who forces his people to worship him is not a good one. A person should respect and appreciate their god and want to worship them. A god is a person of influence and should not have to make people do anything out of their own will. Because Dionysus is for the people of Thebes to worship him he is not a good example of an influential god.

Dionysus forced the people of Thebes to worship him and that is not a very godly characteristic.

The Greek chorus is to observe and comment on the action in the play. A TV show that shows this same characteristic is, to me, Who wants to me a Millonaire. The chorus consisting of being the audience. The person playing the game has three life lines and one of the life lines consist of the audience helping the player choose the correct answer to win more money. There are many other shows that consist of this same concept, but Who's wants to be a millionaire really stood out to me.

Even though I completely agree with Janaye by saying there is only one God. I also believe a god forcing their follower/believer to worship them is extreme. The whole purpose for a god to be worshipped is for refuge, appreciation, and a few other components. If they are not recognized as a god, such as Dionysus, then there is no need to act like a spoiled, attention greedy brat.

  23. *** Dionysus forces the people of Thebes to worship him. How do you relate or view a God who forces humans to worship him?***

Well I for one think that since Dionysus is a God in the Bacchae he has all the power in the world to make people worship him. It is not for mere humans to judge what a god does or doesn't do. If you put it in today's terms of Christianity and you say that God does not force people to worship him then i think that is wrong because God creates all people. He has a plan for everyone, so therefore he has created all people who today worship in different ways/religions. God still controls who worships which "religion" and how and why. It is still God that forces people to do everything...that is what his plan is for. Some people are created to be sinners and others to be saints. Some are created to question the current authority(Jesus Christ) and others to follow what has been done for centuries(The Romans).

I feel a God who forces people to worship him is not truly a God at all. A God should make people want to worship him for reasons other than by force. Gods should influence people to want to worship them. A God that is forcing people to worship him to gain power and fame is neither a true a god or a wanted public figure. A true God of the people of Thebes would not be acting as ungodly as Dionysus.

No one should be forced to worship someone. Since Dionysus is forcing people to worship him I do not consider him a god. By forcing people to worship you this shows you are insecure with yourself because you need people to agree with what you are doing. If someone wants to be worshiped they should achieve great accomplishments in other people’s lives.

I think that it is unfair to be forced to worship a God. Instead of forcing people to worship him, a God should be worshiped based on the choice of the people. A God is someone who is heroic and does great things for his worshipers. Dionysus, in my opinion, is not a God. Dionysus is someone who just wants revenge for what the people of Thebes did to his mother and that is not God-like at all.

The chorus survives in the current TV and film as more of a transition between scenes. It might give some insight or some foreshadowing but for the most part it act as more of a transition. While in greek plays they gave more insight in the action in the story line. Examples of chorus now is the band from Something about Mary. The band throws in some insight but for the most acts as a transition from scene to scene.

  28. Overall A god can only be a god if people do worship him. In the case of Dionysus It's all right in my opinion; but in regards to other gods I'm not so sure of. A god should not force others to believe in him or her.

  29. My favorite modern-day depictions of the Greek chorus in film is that of the Muppets. More specifically, that of the citizens of London in a "Muppet Christmas Carol." They are ubiquitous, yet don't upstage the main characters. Their remarks and songs underline and shed light on the emotion of the scene. They are the representation of the role of audiences participation, if the audience were a part of the story. Finally, they act as a moral compass pulling for human compassion and decency. The only problem in this example is that the story itself doesn't end tragically; however, the idea still applies. In all seriousness, Muppets would be an absolutely phenomenal asset to a re-enactment of a Greek tragedy, because they always have a sort of chorus involved in their films.

In response to Louise's comment about Christianity, I appreciate the thought behind the comment. Being a student of the Scripture and a follower of Jesus, I'd like to clarify something on behalf of the character of God. The Bible is explicit on the matter of God's power and reign over humankind and their actions (see Romans chapter 9), but it also just as explicit on God's "in-culpability" in human sin (see James chapter 1.) It's a complex topic, no doubt, and one I'd be more than willing to discuss, Louise (or whoever) :D

I have an interesting take on this topic for two reasons. To begin with, I am a Christian and beleive that there is only one God. I love the fact that God doesn't force you to worship him, he lest you make that decision on your own. He believes that everything is a choice. I also am highly grateful of the fact that he is a merciful and forgiving god, unlike most gods in other religions. Secondly, I don't understand what the big deal is about Dionysis forcing people to worship him. He is not the only Greek god that has done this. As I previously stated in class, Poseidon was a god who had some serious issues. If you didn't worship him or respect, he was not letting you cross the ocean safely. You was probably going to end up on a whole 'nother island like Odyseuss in the Odyssey or even worse dead cuz he ain't play no games. There was a lot of other mean gods too, but that's one of the meain ones that comes to mind at the time.

A God who forces humans to worship them, is a weak God in my eyes. When people worship someone because they feel forced or obligated to it is no longer worship, but instead slavery. It's almost like the God becomes their master and the power that they hold over them will make them do anything. A true God is truly loved by the people, and the people will want to praise them because they view them as a person they want to be like. If the people truly loved and praised Dionysus he wouldnt need to force people to worship him.

A God who forces humans to worship him… can be misconcepted as desperate. That’s the feel that Dionysus is giving off when he acts this way. Now as to how I feel about it, I would rebel against his orders more after being forced to obey him. A God is a god, because he has power over all, and does not have to demand it. If it is not natural, and you are being respected then obviously you’re not that powerful, and being a God must not be a part of your life. But Dionysus is… Dionysus… which means everything is done in a negative manor. Oh well, do it how you do Dionysus.

In my opinion its really hard to find a surviving chorus in t.v. and film today. The closests thing (like we discused in class)is the show Prices Right. Other things are maybe found in some older films like Little House of Horrors (discussed in class) and some musicals. The thing that survives in t.v. today is really only the remnents of the Greek chorus like perhaps in a film, show where the narrator or author is unknown and comes into clarify and turns out to be someone involved in the story somehow. or like in a show if there is a characterwho isn't in the main story coming in to comment on the happenings.

I dont relate to dionysus at all. Yeah sure the people o thebes didnt believe that he was a god but so what. There were other ways he could have shown or proved that he was a god. yet he chosse to munipulate the people of thebes into their own misery and destructuion. Like cadamus explained gods should not have passions like humans do. dionysus was revenge on a city who didnt believe in him. by force he made them realize that he was the son of zeus.yet i believe that if he wanted to take revenge on anyone it should have been the goddess HERA who tricked his mother semele into her death.

I do not consider him a god since he forces it upon people. He almost seems insecure with himself, because if people desired him so much as a god then the worship would come automatically. Forcing a religion on someone in this case is just as bad as any dictator in another country. To me, he is not a god.
