*** In Chapter 10, Nietzsche claims that "the Greeks in general could not endure individuals on the tragic stage." What does this mean?

*** At the end of Chapter 10, Nietzsche claims that enshrining a myth with "historical foundations" is what causes the death of the myth. In other words, when one "begins [...]to defend the credibility of the myths [...] the feeling for myth perishes." Is an insistence upon the literal truth of myth the death of a religion?

*** What is the significance of the Dionysian dithramb? How is it different from Apollonian music?

Nietzsche, giving the examples of both Oedipus and Prometheus, claims that all tragic heroes are merely Dionysus in a mask. Obviously tragic things happen to tragic heroes thus Dionysus is equated with these tragedies. These tragic heroes, through their suffering, draw us back to Primal Unity.

This brings us back to what in some translations is known as the veil of Maya, in others as the veil of illusions. Any act of lifting this veil and bringing us entirely back to primal unity results in a realization in the inevitability of suffering. Nothing we will ever do can overcome suffering so we stop trying. In this way a representation of Dionysiac suffering displayed through Appoline symbols such as the individual make individuality the root of suffering.

The significance of the Dionysian dithramb is to honor Dionysus, of course. Fifty men or boys are united as one to sing this hymn. A dance is usually incorporated. The hymn is irregular in its poetic expression, is very enthusiastic and frenzied. On the other hand, Apollonian music is very structured and rarely serves a purpose or plays a significant role.

Dithramb was a choral hymn in Ancient greek tragedy, sung by fifty men or boys to honor Dionysus. The music is defined by power to evoke emotional states. When men hear this music he is moved to dance by excercising new symbolic powers that were previously restrained. Apollonian music on the other hand was structured and played no specific role unlike dithramb. The sound and rhythms of Apollonian music was much like the god Apollo very soothing and uplifting. dithramb is very self centered and selfish because it is only focused on one person and then Apollonian music is for all people there are not any selfish attachments.

Dionysian dithramb is an ancient Greek hymn usually sang by boys or men. It is in honor of Dionysus. Also the dithramb was not always happy and joyful. It was sung in the winter months and was sad and mournful. However in history it is said to be the "birth of Dionysus and his adventures". It is usually played with a flute. Also, it is in a sense selfish whereas the Apollonian music is for everyone. Contrastingly, apollonian music is associated with a lyre. Apollo was given a lyre from Hermes. Apollo was also the leader of the Muses and served as the patron God of music.

  6. Q:[What is the significance of the Dionysian dithramb? How is it different from Apollonian music?]

A: A dithramb was a choral hymn, in ancient Greek tragedy, sung by fifty men or boys to honor Dionysus. These songs were usually frenzied, passionate, and usually only focused on one person, making it a self-centered act, much like Dionysus. Contrary, Apollonian music was usually thought of as more serene, and enjoyed by everyone. It was thought of as much more selfless than the dithramb.

Dithramb is a choir that has fifty men or boys, and they sing to honor Dionysus. Apollonian music is different because the music does not praise Apollo instead the music is to be enjoyed by everyone.

Dithramb is significant in the way the word itself is depicted for, worshiping dionysious with about 50 men or boys. It usually consisted of a dance that would have no structure and may very desirable. In the since you would want to do the dance in a very uplifting manner but, were also very self centered in a Dioniysis manner. Apollonian was very much more structured and the opposite of self centered Dionisysis music made with the Dithramb.

A dithyramb was a choral hymn, sung by 50 Greek men or boys, in honor of Dionysus. Dionysian music was frenzied and meant to evoke emotion and when heard, made you want to dance. It was however self-fish because it was only focused on one person. Apollonian music was different because it was structural and enjoyed by everyone.

  10. *** What is the significance of the Dionysian dithramb? How is it different from Apollonian music?

A dithramb is an all male chorus made up of 50 members. The primitive form of a tradgedy contained only a chorus and no actors. Nietzsche argued that although idealy the chorus could not be recognized as a spectator, the chorus and the people were not seperate.

A dithramb differs from Apollonian music because it is within this music where the individual loses the essence of their being. Rather than following the cultural and uniform sound of apollo, the dithramb puts the audience into frenzy. You need one state of mind to make the other possible.

  11. *** What is the significance of the Dionysian dithramb? How is it different from Apollonian music?

A Dithyramb is a greek choral song of wild character and usually was irregular in form. It is the music before it is written down. it is the passion and the melodies that inspire that a person can completely loose themselves in. It is what I imagined as what played in Beethoven's mind before he tamed it into being a composition. That is when it becomes Apollonian. when the unbridled passion and fury is taken and given form, stucture. Made to have a certain beat and rythm so that it is more coherent and less frenzied.

it requires both though to truly make music. the fleeing, chaotic thought, .. the passion...calmed by the being put into symbols and stucture so it can be replayed again and again.

Dithyramb was a choral hymn sung by many men to honor Dionysus. It's different from Apollonian music because Dionysus music had power to evoke emotional states while Apollonian music was structural and played no active role. Music was Dionysus essence in life. Under the influence of Dionysus music a state of nature was created which neutralized civilization. For example, his music brought an audience to a state of natural unity.

A dithyramb was a choral hymn, in ancient Greek tragedy, sung by fifty men or boys to honor Dionysus. How a Appolonian music is different from Dithyramb is that it was found in the dialogue which made an even out piece. While the Appolonian gave structureto ones piece, the Dithyramb help secure the whole play by connecting each indivudual in the play.

The significance of the Dionysian dithramb is it helps bring the audience together. They start to feel like they are part of the chorus because Dionysus makes people feel as one. When the audience feels like they are part of the chorus they understand the tragedy and see the truth.

  16. The dithyramb was really just a song to honor Dionysus. The group is usually 50 men and/or boys. Appolonian was more of a structured art form. It also seemed to be enjoyed by more people.

  17. Q: In Chapter 10, Nietzsche claims that "the Greeks in general could not endure individuals on the tragic stage." What does this mean?

A: I hope this doesn't lack too much insight, but it seems too. :)

The beginning of the chapter asserts that Dionysus is the purest tragic hero, and Prometheus and Oedipus are simply types (or "masks") of the original tragic hero. Both Prometheus and Oedipus suffer greatly, and in the same way, Dionysus must suffer too. The unusual part is that because Dionysus, the god of community, suffers implies his suffering over individuation. It would seem that his willingness to suffer things, like being ripped to pieces, would be to enlighten others to the evils of individuation and the paradise found solely in primal unity.

hope that's at least coherent. :)

The same way Dionysis and Apollo are opposites, their music is opposite. Apollonian music is structered the same way the Apollonian lifestyle is. While the Dionysian lifestyle is like a free spirit who finds ecstasy in many things. The Dionysian music is much the same way. It is all about passion and letting loose. With this music it makes you want to be free and dance. The dithyramb, an ancient Greek hymn, was sung to Dionysus. The dithyramb is much like everything else in the Dionysian ways. It is full of energy and enthusiasm.

  19. *** Is an insistence upon the literal truth of myth the death of a religion?

Insisting upon the literal truth can most definitely be the death of a religion. If people constantly try to prove that God talked to Jesus or that Buddha has been reincarnated eventually the scientific facts are going to prove otherwise. Some religious events can certainly be proven they’re not all myths but there are also some events that scientifically speaking just could not happen. After a while people will lose their FAITH and rely solely on facts. This would lead to the death of any religion because religion is based on faith and belief not facts and truths.

The significance of the Dionysian dithyramb is a chorus that sings in honor of Dionysus. The Dithyramb was a musical form developed specifically for this. The music brings to mind an emotional state. It’s an ancient Greek song usually sang by fifty boys or men, sang in the winter months, and was usually centered on one person. 21. What is the significance of the Dionysian dithyramb? How is it different from Apollonian music?

Dithyramb is significant because it was sung in honor of Dionys. Usually sung by a group of fifty or more boys. This music usually rattled a frenzy and made everyone dance and become irrational even if this wasn't their intentions.
It made everybody lose their sense of individuality and become one.

While Apolloian music was more inspirational and willingly enjoyed by everyone.Even if it wasn't the intent of the listener, Apollo music everyone at ease and a state of relaxtion while a Dithyramb caused everyone to lose their self and become corrupt by the music.

  22. The music of Dionysus differentiates from that of Apollos because whenever people would sing for Dionysus they would evoke an emotional state unlike Apollonian. One would have a lot more fun singing Dionysian music because it represented the god more than anything. When one thinks of the gods Dionysus and Apollo, Dionysus could be viewed as the someone who partys and Apollo as sort of someone who is relaxed. Which represents both of their music and how they relate.

  24. *** What is the significance of the Dionysian dithyramb? How is it different from Apollonian music?

The significance of Dionysian dithyramb is to worship Dionysus. In this genre of music, man is compelled to dance, and in dancing he exercises new symbolic powers that were restrained before. While an Apollonian scale would be one with easy to remember notes and order, a Dionysian dithyramb is more detailed, therefore being more personable to himself.

*** What is the significance of the Dionysian dithramb? How is it different from Apollonian music?

The purpose of the Dionysian dithyramb is to create a personal, emotional response for it's listeners, which they are to express through dance. Apollonian music, on the other hand, is more structured. Its listeners are to stay calm while listening, and look into themselves for insight instead of doing whatever comes to mind. The music itself is not personal though. Both types of music correspond to the personalities of Dionysus and Apollo.

The dionysian dithramb was sung to dionysus. It is different from Apollonian music because Apollonian music is a lot like the Apollonian lifestyles which is very structured. Dionysian on the other hang is free spirit and all about finding passion and ecstacy in everything. The Dionysian Dithramb is relates to a lot that represents Dionysus.

to my understanding, both of the music styles are based on the personalities of Dionysis and Apollo. The dithyram was sung and it evoked lots of emotions. The Apollonian musc is more structered and doesn't really involve emotions. It was boring and more of something you do just to do it.

A Dionysian dithyramb is a song that is sung to Dionysus by a chorus of men and boys. It is a mix of many different rhythms and improvised lyrics. This song expresses the chaos and freedom of Dionysianism. A pean is the opposite of a dithyramb and is sung to Apollo. A pean is much more somber, and was often sung by soldiers going to war.

The Dionysian Dithramb really relates to Dionysus in every aspect because the dionysian dithramb was sung just for dionysus. Apollonian music on the other hand is very structured to the Apollonian culture which music isn't personal at all.

The Dionysian dithyramb was sung by 50 men and boys and signified respect toward Dionysus. It was sung in a single chorus until one man separated himself from the group which started the drama of the chorus. This represents the ecstatic feelings in Dionysian believes. Apollonian music didn't have any sort of significance.

The significance of the Dithramb is to honor Dionysus in the play chorus and to help let the people know when suspense is coming up. It is a sorta structured thing but when the one person comes out for a solo it comes all out of wack. and unlike Apollonian he has music that is very structured and you already know whats about to happen.

I agree that with Nietzsche I completely understand that once something has credibility its mystery is lost and not so interesting. For example if man knew if aliens truly existed the myth that they do exist would completely dissipate. I guess the felling of not knowing if something exists including the non-capability to prove it either way gives the unknown its advantage over the curiosity of the human being. The insistence upon the literal truth of myth is defiantly not the death of a religion, simply because it is so embedded in the head and soul of others. Unlike the myth of aliens the myth of religion is provable to oneself by the inner feelings of a person.

Apollo is described as the God of the individual. When Nietzsche says that Greeks can't see individuals on the tragic stage, he is saying that though tragedy often follows a certain order similar to Apollo, they are actually Dionysian because characters like Edipus are modeled after Dionysian.

The Dionysian dithyramb is significant because it is a wild and ecstatic song sung by a chorus in honor of Dionysus. It is loosely structured since it is primarily based on the emotions of the singer. It is used to evoke emotions of "awe and terror"which reflect Dionysus' characteristics.

Just as the dithyramb emobodies the persona of Dionysus, Apollonian music reflects the characteristics of Apollo. Apollonian music is structured ,unlike Dionysian, with uniformed rhythm, flow, and tones. While the Dionysian dithyramb served as a praise hymn to Dionysus, Apollonian music had no active role.
