  1. * What is Primal Unity and how does it differ from Principium Individuationis?*

Primal Unity is when one has gone back to nature and is one with others. It is when one has completely let onesself go and enjoys the commune with others around them, forgetting their differences. Primal Unity is somewhat like what people of the psychedelic movement were trying to achieve in the 1960s and 1970s. To be one with a higher being and one with each other.

Principium Individuationis is a way of envisioning each person as their own person that is seperate and distict- the individual. It is being consious of oneself and the feeling of being seperate from the disarray of life.

--- Primal Unity differs very much from Principium Individuationis. ---

Primal Unity is the ruin of Principium Individuationis. It breaks down all the barricades between people and the barricade between a person and nature. It brings one back to the disarray of life with its suffering and causes a person to be part of a larger whole.

I agree with Nietzsche on this because I believe while Dionysus is the god of desire, one must "usually" contemplate their decisions before acting. For example, one might desire to have a new shirt and lack the finances for it. So, they must first decide how much they desire it. And if they choose to steal it, they must then contemplate why they did so later on.

I believe that Nietzche refers to Dionysus as the good of desire because he is more inclined to lead ohers into doing what they feel is right no matter the consequences. In a way that it's sort of chaotic but i can also see how it could relate to letting oneself go and enjoying a life of selfish pleasures. Now as for nietzche's discription of Apollo as the god of contemplation im rally confussed as to how Niezche made this comparison. for example contemplation would require one to think things through and consider all and any out come of one's decission. And yet Apolllo encourages others to view themselfs as superiors. Wouldn't they consider the feelings of those who the make themself superior to either by apperance or intellegence.

  4. *** What is the Primal Unity, and how does it differ from the Principium Individuationis?

Primal Unity is when men are "under the influence" of Dionysus and they lose themselves as individuals. Now everyone is united and no longer see themselves as individuals. They feel as if they are one with their neighbor.

Primal Unity differs the Principium Individuation because everyone one is united into one community rather than each person having individuality like with the principle of the individual.

  5. Primal Unity is when man is one with others and with nature. In the Dionysian spirit, man is in ecstasy and does not think about the chaos and differences around him.
Contrary to Primal Unity, Principium Individuationis is when man is completely separate from all others. He is an individual and there are no others like him. All other men are separate and distinct men.
The primal unity is what breaks down the barriers of principium individuationis.

What Nietzsche meant by this statement is that the Dionysian creates images through the art of music. Considering that the Greek Lyric has always used music as a dyonisian medium, it rather produces a symbol than real life experiences of the poet himself.

Many of us listen to music to experience other feelings in which we havent before. It also draw a story in our heads, allowing us to envision a person, place or thing without the use of visible images. I think listening to music in general highly relates to the given quote. As we discussed in class, we all lose ourselves sometimes. Whether it be a positve or negative loss, its healthy to live outside your normal every so often.

Music, in my opinion, can give us this option to step into the dionysian world where we can define our own images through the sounds we are hearing.

  7. *** What is the Primal Unity, and how does it differ from the Principium Individuationis?

Primal Unity reflects Dionysus. It happens when one can lose oneself in the common experience by forgetting about their differences and acting the same.

Principium Individuationis reflects Apollo. This occurs when each person has a particular trait that no one else possesses. This makes each person different from everyone else.

*** What is the Primal Unity, and how does it differ from the Principium Individuationis?

Primal Unity goes hand in hand with Dionysus. Dionysus makes individuals realize we all come from the same sufferring substance which breaks the barriers between individuals and bring us together. This is different from the Principium Individuationis because this literally means "Principle of Individualism" which reflects the god Apollo. This states that we are all seperate individuals which is completely opposite of Primal Unity.

  9. *** What is the Primal Unity, and how does it differ from the Principium Individuationis?

Primal Unity is when people act together and forget they are just one person. The differences between people don’t matter in primal unity. This happens when people lose one’s self which is why primal unity is linked with Dionysus. It is also linked to chaos and intoxication. Principium Individuationis, however, shows the differences between people and that is important in order to have a normal functioning society. Principium Individuationis is linked to Apollo because he represents everything that is part of the unique individuality of man or thing.

  10. *** What is the Primal Unity, and how does it differ from the Principium Individuationis?

Primal unity is the state of being one with the nature which are the characteristics of Dionys. The fact that his actions and behavior puts everybody in a trance making them feel as one. Forgetting about the logic of life and enjoying their intoxication. It joins everyone together making them forget able the suffers and hardship of their reality. One loses their sense of individuality and becomes one with nature and the surrounding people.

Principle of Individualism is having your own personality and mind that separates you from all other beings. None of your characteristics and actions are similar to any other making you distinct and different. This describes Apollo, he is well aware of his differences and embraces them rather than shame them. Making him a true individual.

Primal Unity differs from Principle of Individualism simply because primal unity doesn't allow one to differ from anybody. It forces everyone to be the same while unrealistically leaving in a dream instead of reality. With the principle of indidualism you choose to look at the world in a way which is your own rather than have the same perception or view as all others.

  11. Those who find themselves more closely aligned with the Dionysian persuasion will espouse the doctrine of Primal Unity. That is, when becoming a blissful entity, not just of a temporal disposition, one starts to break out of his imprisonment to individuality and is freed to be at peace and oneness with his local and universal communities. This event implies the basic human desire and need to escape the bonds of suffering - being an individual, unknowable island unto oneself; and the desire and need to blended into something greater than any given individual.

Principium Individuationis, on the other hand, is the "law laid down" by Apollo and obeyed by his followers. It is the teaching that to be an individual, to have boundaries and barriers, is necessary. Because of human proclivity to strife and disorder, Principium Individuationis must act almost as a non-militaristic martial law, for the sake of maintaining a functioning human civilization and society. Implicit in this belief is the human inclination towards chaos makes the former teaching a tantalizingly unreachable utopia.

As a side note, It seems interesting to me that the liberal and conservative parties of America seem to reflect these archaic systems of belief in an extremely relative context. Liberals seem drawn to the idea of Primal Unity, while conservatives appreciate the quality of Principium Individuationis.

  12. *** What is the Primal Unity, and how does it differ from the Principium Individuationis?

Primal Unity is forgetting all the differences and becoming one. An example of Primal Unity would be like going to a rave. Everybody set their differences aside and come together to celebrate that one thing they all have in common. Principium Individuationis is the opposite of Primal Unity. Principium Individuationis is individuality and separating yourself from others. Its about appearance and having your own beliefs.

  13. *** What is the Primal Unity, and how does it differ from the Principium Individuationis?***

Primal Unity is a Dionysian belief. It states that through Dionysus people forget about their own troubles and their own selfish needs and cut loose and act as one. People let go of all their differences and instead of acting as individuals, they celebrate their unity with each other and with the world.

Principium Individuationis is an Apollonian belief. This belief is the complete opposite of Primal Unity. It states that in order for the world to function, one should act as an individual and not care about anyone else.

Primal Unity differs from Principium Individuationis because Primal Unity believes in togetherness with your community and the world. While Principium Individuationis believes in individualism and separation from your community and the world.

  14. *** What is the Primal Unity, and how does it differ from the Principium Individuationis?***

Primal unity is to act as one rather than as an individual. It is getting along and not necessarily being all the same but being one together as a unit. This creates less room for the individual to stand out. Principium individuationis is the choice of being anindividual. It means to be one person stand out and make change to break away from the norm, the unit. This is more Apollonian whereas primal unity is Dionysian. They are almost exact opposites of one another. However, you can possess qualities in yourself from both sides.

*** On pg 19 (Chapter 6) Nietzsche implies that Dionysus is the god of desire, while Apollo is the god of contemplation. Explain.

Nietzsche saw Dionysus as a form of ethuasiasm and ecstasy. As the wine-god Dinonysus represents drunkenness and ecstasy. Music is the most prominent art with Dionysus because it appeals to emotions and not reasoning. Everything Dionysus did was based on desire. Therfore, Nietzsche describing Dionysus as the god of desire is true. The Dinonysus way of life is to do things that make you happy. Decisions in this way of life are purely based on desire.

Apollo is based on analytical thinking. Uniqueness & individuality are all characteristics of Apollo. Since he is the sun-go he represents, light, clarity, and form. Rational thoughts and struture is Apollonian hence, sculpture is the most Apollonian art. Since analyzing and being rational are charactersitics of Apollo, contemplation also conincides. Nietzsche describing Apollo as the god of contemplation is correct. Someone who contemplates things a lot is someone who is structured and analytical just like Apollo.

Apollo reprents the norm and all that people have to or are expected to do. He represnts the individual and the contemplation within ones self. Today Apollo represnts society and what we as people believe we need to do or what we do because others are doing it.

Dinoysus represnts our desire to break free from our normally apollo lives and branch out to get what we want. Nietzche refers to music as dominatly dinoysian because it branches out from normality and promotes and emotion and the urge for desire. Unlike Apollo Dinoysus acts on impulses without thinking or contemplating the outcome.

Primal Unity is simply the feeling of being filled with pure ecstasy and losing all care for their individual needs. People act as "One" and don't feel a care in the world. This sense of ecstasy can be taken away by the idea of Principium Individuationis. This idea classifies everyone as their own being and revolves around individualism.

I agree with Nietzsche when he claims that Dionysus is the god of desire and Apollo is the god of contemplation. Apollo is the god of contemplation because he likes order. Apollo contemplates what is the best thing to do in certain situations because of his relation to order. While Dionysus is the opposite of Apollo. Dionysus is the god of desire because he encourages people to do what they want no matter the consequences. He is completely against order.

Primal Unity is being in a state of mind or going to a place where you're in a zone and you forget yourself and become one with the crowd, uniting together because the experience feels so good. Principium Indviduationis differs from this because this is acting as an individual. An individual who either wants to break free from the united or make their own choices and do things their own way. It's pretty clear that Apollo stands for individualism while Dionsyian is for primal unity.

Primal Unity is a characteristic of a Dionysian belief stating that people should be care and act as an individual, while enjoying the intoxication and chaos of life. During this period people forget about the troubles, hardships and suffering they are facing in reality. Where they let go of all their differences and come together to share the same beliefs and become united as one.

Principium Individuationis is Apollonian beliefs which represent the uniqueness in life. They believe in being an individual and embracing them. They have an ordinary life. Everyone has their own personal characteristic that no one can seize.

  21. *** What is the Primal Unity, and how does it differ from the Principium Individuationis? ***

Primal Unity, a concept by Dionysus, is when individuals who had separated themselves from one another, become a family/community and enjoy each other’s presence. While Principium Individuationis, a concept by Apollo, is when someone would stay to theirselves and not give aid or fellowship with someone else and believes it's ok.

Primal Unity differs from Principium Individuationis because Primal Unity incorporates unity (keyword) with everyone no matter what race one might be, financial status, etc. While Principium Individuationis, makes others discriminate with one another where one might leave you hanging if you were in need, which I believe is a more unbalanced society then balanced.

Apollo is the god of contemplation because he analyzes and is structured. These characteristics help show that Nietzche is correct in that they he is the god of contemplation. He represents the structured society that every believes that we need to be.

  23. * What is Primal Unity and how does it differ from Principium Individuationis?*

Primal Unity is a state that you enter when you lose yourself and start acting as a community rather than an individualist. You forgot your differences with people when engulfed in the influence of Dionysus.

Principium Individuationis is completely opposite of Primal Unity. It is the Principal of Individuation, in which barriers are set up to block out the feeling of being a community. Boundaries help maintain a healthy functioning society and when that starts to break down you can tell Dionysus is approaching.

  24. What is the Primal Unity, and how does it differ from the Principium Individuationis?

Primal Unity, simply, is what connects us as human beings. It's what everybody has in common. According to Nietzsche this Primal Unity lies in suffering and as we discussed in class, misery loves company. Primal Unity allows us to relate to one another essentially making relationships possible.

Principum Individaationis is the idea that each person is an individual, completely distinct from anyone or anything else. It is essentially the idea that you are you and I am me. Those boundaries are not crossed.

Given a definition of what each of these concepts are I think the reasons they're different are self evident. Primal Unity is what connects us to all other people. Principium Individuationis is what keeps us distinct from them.

Primal Unity is when a group of people lose their individualism and begin acting all in the same manor. This is clearly a reflection upon Dionysus as he represents chaos.

When Nietzsche says that Dionysus is the god of desire i think it relates more to out of reach things. I have that Dionysian is more unstructured so there for you can have dreams and fantasy that you would like to have but not necessarily can, making it a desire. On the other hand you have Apollo being the god of contemplation and the more structured god. He might think about things and decide if they are a necessity or not making him the more structured one.

On pg 19 (Chapter 6) Nietzsche implies that Dionysus is the god of desire, while Apollo is the god of contemplation. Explain.

Nietzsche implies that Dionysus is the god of desire. More specifically, an overwhelming yearning for something unattainable. When one generally encounters the term "desire", they are more than likely to associate it with the term "love" or "passion". When appertaining to Dionysus, however; more emphasis is placed on the term's more simplistic definition. Dionysian desire has little to no concern for any other factors in association to the item in which the individual seeks to obtain. That individual is likely to act impulsively, and proceed in acquiring the object desired by any means necessary. This blind persistence can foreshadow a dismal conclusion in acquisition of more impractical desires. It is the impulsive act of carrying out ones desires within the confines of primal unity that presents the dichotomy between itself and the nature of Apollonian contemplation;the main focus of which, acknowledgment of something's existence without action. In a sense, contemplation calls for one to become fully aware; once again, emphasizing the beauty of appearance that is so commonly used when describing Apollo. Apollonian awareness is the foundation of an individual's sagacious nature; a lack of which, is indicative of falling victim to Dionysian desire.

In this case, contemplation means that one is just thinking too much about something. There are no decisions to be made. Everything is in order and the simple matter of thinking almost meditating is in progress defining Apollo.
But what happens when that thinking turns to desire? Enter Dionysus. Desire brings problems and desire is never satisfied; one always wants more. This thinking is now excessive.

As we were initially talking about this topic in class today I highly feel that Dionysus is the god of desire. As I said previously in the first blog Dionysus in my opinion is the god of sin. For example When a married man begins to desire another woman that is the beggining of adultery which is a sin. Although desires are usually never fulfilled It is still a sin in the making. Apollo definitely deals with contemplation because in order to do anything the correct way you contemplate wat you ar about to do. He is the gpod of structure and discipline and even once you do something wrong your conciensce plays with you wich to me coincides with contemplation.

  32. The definition of desire is a longing or craving, as for something that brings satisfaction or enjoyment. However desire is not always positive. Although Adam had the freedom to eat a variety of fruits from various trees he still chose to intake in the one that he was forbidden. Desire is the act of wanting outside of the ordinary.

The definition of contemplation is to have full or deep consideration; reflection. Apollo is the God of order and order requires planning.

  33. *** On pg. 19 (Chapter 6) Nietzsche implies that Dionysus is the god of desire, while Apollo is the god of contemplation. Explain.

When Nietzsche puts Dionysus into context, He refers to the desire as for more. As human being we naturally always desire or long for more. Their is never enough money or knowledge to satisfy the human being. Money is the root of all evil which relates with Dionysus, also knowledge when you think about it in a biblical context. When adam and eve ate from the tree of knowledge they lost connection with God and chaos was introduced in their life. For example it can be lust of a women you see on the street because you are pushing from contemplating to a desire of this women. It could also be longing in money by robbing someone or lusting in money itself and therefore being selfish.

When it refers to Apollo and contemplation it is more of reminiscing among something or someone. It is more of a thought of admiring to certain extent or valuing something that you thought upon. For example we can take the same example about the women on the street and contemplate on how beautiful she is. It could be also contemplating you life and the schedule that it is run by everyday.

  34. Q:[What is Primal Unity and how does it differ from Principium Individuationis?]

A: Primal Unity is when an individual loses sight of who they are, and becomes uniformed, loses their identity, and blends in with society. This is a reflection of Dionysus. Dissimilar to Primal Unity, Principium Individuationis is directly related to Apollo, who believes that everyone should have their own identity. It means that we should not all look and act the same as everyone else. Each person has different traits about them that makes that person an individual.
